How do I get to Mittersill by public transport?

Will I need snow chains?
Where snow chains are currently mandatory can be found on the page of the ÖAMTC.
As private rooms, holiday apartments and farms in particular are often located on the mountain, please find out in advance with the accommodation whether snow chains are required when making your way there.

Are there roadblocks on the way to Mittersill or in Pinzgau?

Are there doctors and pharmacies in Mittersill - Hollersbach - Stuhlfelden?

The team from Tauernapotheke pharmacy (Kirchgasse 6) is at your service.

Medical care is ensured in Mittersill.
All doctors in Upper Pinzgau, be it general practitioners or specialists, can be found in the physicians directory. In addition, the Tauernklinik also houses a GP practice. The general practitioner standby duty can be reached on 141.

Is there a hospital?

The Tauernklinikum Mittersill (Felberstrasse 1), in addition to the outpatient clinic, also houses specific departments (internal medicine, orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology & obstetrics, ENT, radiology, …) In serious emergencies (accidents, serious or life-threatening injuries or illness, severe medical conditions) please go to the outpatient clinic directly without medical referral or in emergencies contact the rescue services on 144.

What can I do in bad weather?

National Park Worlds Mittersill
Die Nationalparkwelten with the spectacular 360° panoramic cinema are among the most popular visitor highlights in the Holiday Region Hohe Tauern National Park. The 1,800 m² large Alpine adventure world spans three levels and provides children and adults with unique insights into the Hohe Tauern National Park as a habitat by means of interactive theme stations.
Many leisure activities are also available in doors.
Such as the national park centre, das Felberturm-Museum, das indoor pool at Sporthotel Kogler or a nostalgic trip with the historic steam and diesel trains of Pinzgau local railway. Or go on a shopping tour through the shops and stores of Mittersill commercial town and warm up again in the cafés and restaurants.

Camping

Can I go camping in Mittersill - Hollersbach - Stuhlfelden?

Unfortunately, there are no camping sites in our three townships, but those who want to spend their holidays even closer to nature will find everything they need at the camping sites in the region. PLEASE NOTE: In the area of Mittersill municipality tents, caravans or campervans and similar mobile accommodation are allowed to be put up in outdoor public places for the purpose of spending the night. Camping in open country in Hohe Tauern National Park is strictly prohibited!

Gastronomy

Where can I eat out?

Pinzgau doughnuts, cheese dumplings and cranberry dumplings – just hearing the regional delicacies makes your mouth water.
Or how about an Italian pizza for a change? Here you’ll find all restaurants and inns in Mittersill - Hollersbach - Stuhlfleden.

Where can I go partying?

In Mittersill-Hollersbach-Stuhlfelden we like to take it easy. Those who still want to sample the nightlife can find plenty of opportunity in the neighbouring townships.

Where can I get some fresh bread from the bakery?

Fresh bread rolls for breakfast, a nice sandwich for your hiking snack or a cup of fragrant coffee and some cake in the afternoon – just the thought of it makes your mouth water. All bakeries can be found here.

Where can I buy regional products?

Many products are made by local farmers using traditional handicraft and thus get onto the table straight from the producer – transport paths couldn’t be any shorter. Those who want to enjoy Upper Pinzgau specialities back home as well can stock up either at the Mittersill weekly market or at the farm-gate sales.

Is there a guest card?

You’ll get the free guest card either directly at your accommodation or in the tourist information (Stadtplatz 4, Sparkasse bank building). Please bring the registration form.
With the guest card you’ll enjoy various benefits, such as free participation in the ranger-programme.

What is the Nationalpark Summercard?

All holiday guests who stay overnight in a member establishment receive the Nationalpark Summercard allowing them to choose, daily – also on the day of arrival and departure – 1 of 60 attractions

to avail of for free as well as making use of further discounts. The Nationalpark Summercard is NOT available for purchase.

What is the Salzburger Land Card?

With this All-Inclusive-Card you’ll enjoy free admission to some 190 attractions all throughout the state for 6 or 12 days.

Prices Salzburger Land Card

The age on the first day of holiday applies. From a family’s third child aged between 4 and 15.9 years the SalzburgerLand Card is free.

Mittersill Plus - Tourist information

Where is the tourist information?

Since November 2021, the tourist information and the Mittersill Plus office are located in Zeller Strasse 2 in 5730 Mittersill.
Coming from Zell am See, cross the bridge and after some 100 metres the parking lot is on the left.

When is the tourist information open?

Monday – Friday from 8:00-12:00 and 13:00-17:00.
In the high season (summer holidays, Christmas until Easter) Monday – Friday, 8:00-17:00, Saturday from 9:00-12:00, on public holidays from 10:00-12:00.

Where are M+ vouchers available?

Mittersill Plus vouchers are available in the Mittersill Plus-office. They can be bought in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 euros. Payment is also possible by debit or credit card. In addition, the vouchers can also be ordered online.

Where can I redeem the M+ vouchers?

What public transport is available?

Pinzgau local train
The narrow-gauge railway of Pinzgau local train connects Upper Pinzgau from Krimml to Zell am See. In addition, nostalgic trips with historic steam and diesel trains are offered.

Bus
The buses by the Salzburg transportation authority supplement the network of local public transport. Here you’ll find the timetable information.

Taxi
Due to our rural location amidst the mountains, not every town, village or accommodation can be reached directly by public transport. For this, or also for airport- and train station-shuttles, the following taxi companies will be happy to take you there:

What is the Tälertaxi (Valley taxi)?

The national park valleys in the Holiday Region Hohe Tauern National Park do not have any public transport - on the one hand to protect the wonderful, pristine natural landscape and on the other hand to allow hikers to experience and enjoy nature. To allow all our guests to experience the National Park Hohe Tauern up close, we have the hiking taxis. These licensed shuttle services will take you to the national park valleys.

Local tax

How high is the local tax?

The local tax in Mittersill € 2.00 in Hollersbach € 2.00 and in Stuhlfelden is € 2.00.

Who is exempt from the local tax?

The following persons are exempt:

  • Persons up to the age of 15
  • Persons who are in the municipal area to exercise their profession, if staying continuously for more than 2 weeks, and persons who are in the municipal area for the purposes of general school education
  • Persons visiting their spouses, linear relatives, siblings or persons related by marriage to the same degree and stay overnight with them, if these reside permanently in the municipal area

Parking

Where in the town centre can I park?

The town centre of Mittersill is a short-term parking zone (blue ground markings). With a parking disc (available for free in Mittersill Plus of this in Zeller Strasse 2) you can park 90 minutes for free. Also short-term parking zones are the parking lots at the elementary school, Berger parking lot, the parking spaces in Rathausgasse as well as at the hospital.

Where can I find long-term parking?

Those who want to park long-term can use the long-term parking lots at the ornamental pond (behind Stotter car dealership or Zierteich-Kindergarten “Kunterbunt”), at the day-care centre at Caritas or at the national park centre.
The permanent parking lots are NOT camping pitches!

Public WiFi

Is there be Wi-Fi in Mittersill?

Mittersill offers its citizens, guests and visitors free internet access by means of Wi-Fi hotspots at publicly accessible places. Access is completely free and simple to connect to:

  • Activate the Wi-Fi feature on your device (smartphone, notebook, tablet).
  • This will automatically search for available Wi-Fi networks.
  • Connect to the network "free-key".
  • Accept the GTC.
  • And you’re off surfing for free.

Cycling & summer sports

Is there a Bike-Camp?

In the Austrian Alps, thousands of kilometres of thrills are waiting for you - from hidden forest trails to flowy single tracks far above the tree line. Do you want to experience the perfect outing? That needs time and experience. Do you want to combine the individual sections of the best trails into a unique bike adventure? An art form. Thanks to years of experience, the guides from Bike Austria can guide you through your adventure. In the heart of the Alps’ largest nature reserve, Hohe Tauern National Park, you’ll find the ultimate MTB- and Gravelbike-experience in Austria’s coolest bike-territory.

Where can I rent a bike?

Bicycles and e-bikes are available for rent at Sport Breitfuss right by the lower terminus of the the Panorama lift. There you will also find a bicycle-service and can buy accessories.

Where can I charge my e-bike?

Can I ride by bicycle across the Felbertauern?

The Felbertauernstrasse from and to East Tirol is recommended only for experienced cyclists due to the many avalanche galleries and the continuous climb. Please also note that there is no separate bicycle lane for cyclists and they need to use the regular lane. In addition, cyclists are not allowed to use the Felbertauerntunnel, the core part of the road (motorway pursuant to § 47 Highway Code). For this reason, the Felbertauernstraße AG offers a bicycle-shuttle service, which is available by individual request. Registering for the bicycle transfer is not necessary, as they are on duty around the clock. If you want to shorten your waiting time at the tunnel portal, you can let the tunnel attendant know you’re coming a couple of kilometres before the Felbertauerntunnel (phone number 0043/4875/8806-11). Or you can take a short rest and order the bicycle-shuttle directly at the tunnel portal. You will find the notice for this some 100 metres before the tunnel entrance at the northern portal with a precise description of how cyclists can avail of this service. If you are coming from the direction of Matrei, simply contact our toll staff. Normally, you will not have to wait very long. The cost for this service for a maximum of 6 persons (including the bicycles) is €18.00.

Where can I play tennis & squash?

Those who want to stay fit while on holidays can do so with a game of tennis or squash.

Where can I go fishing?

The lakes and rivers in Upper Pinzgau are of drinking water quality and are a paradise for fishermen and fly fishers. Fishing permits for Zierteich Pond and Bürgerkanal Canal are available in the Mittersill Plus office (Zeller Strasse 2). Fishing permits for Salzach, Elisabethsee and the rest of Upper Pinzgau are available in Hotel Bräurup. There you will also find a dedicated fishing shop.

Holidays with your dog

Are dogs required to be kept on the leash and wear a muzzle?

In the municipal area of Mittersill, dogs must be kept on the leash in the following areas outside of buildings and sufficiently fenced in areas:

  • Historic town centre with hospital, schools, Anton-Webern-Park, church with cemetery, train station, Stampferau, Klausen, Lendsiedlung, Äusserer Markt, Burk incl. retirement home, Rettenbach, Felben
  • Kneipp facility incl. Kneipp course and Grashüpferplatz, Kreuzgasse
  • Ornamental pond with the national park centre
  • Footpath Salzachdamm from Stampferau in direction of Stuhlfelden
  • Tauern Bikeway Kürsingerdamm and golf course
  • In public sports-, swimming- and children’s playgrounds, dogs are not allowed.

A Kompass hiking map (scale 1 : 40,000) is available for € 2.00 in Mittersill Plus office (Zeller Strasse 2).

Which pistes are open?

From Hohe Tauern National Park up to Kitzbühel’s Streif. Which of the 230 kilometres of optimally groomed pistes are open can be found here.

Which lifts are open?

With 57 modern lifts and cableways, there is nothing in the way of your perfect skiing enjoyment any more, here you’ll find the Lift-status.

How much is the ski pass?

Skiing need not be expensive. Low-priced offers, such as the Resterhöhe Special, as well as the current lift prices can be found here.

When does the Skibus go?

Not only the Skibus, but also the Pinzgau local railway (railway replacement service in winter 2021/22) bring skiers with a valid ski pass up to the lower terminus or intermediate terminus of the panorama lift at no cost. Here you’ll find the timetable for the Skibus.

How long are the cross-country ski trails open?

Those who have enough of the piste, but don’t want to go without boards under their feet, can switch to the cross-country ski track. Be it a couple of quick loops on the floodlit Blizzard-track in the centre of Mittersill, gliding along peacefully in the Hochmoor track on Wasenmoos sunny plateau or racking up the miles on the sections of the Pinzgau track in Pinzgau and Bramberg as well as Stuhlfelden and Zell am See. Where can I rent equipment?

Equipment for skiing, snowboarding cross-country skiing and ski touring is available for rent at Sport Breitfuss. Either directly in the main store in Mittersill or even more conveniently right by the piste (lower terminus & immediate terminus of the panorama lift). Skiing and ski touring equipment is available for rent at Sport Steger. Either in the main store in the centre or directly in the shop on Resterkogel.

Where can I book skiing lessons?

No matter if children, adults or private lessons. Be it on skis, snowboard or in terrain, Snow Experts are – as the name suggests – true experts in all matters snow. In addition, the equipment can be rented directly on site. Apart from skiing and snowboarding lessons for adults and children, Stefan’s Ski School also offers cross-country skiing and ski touring courses as well as ice climbing. Equipment is also available for rent.

Is the ice-skating rink open?

The ice-skating rink (Sportplatzstrasse 1) in Mittersill is open subject to weather conditions. Ice skates are available for rent at the sports retailers in town: Sport Breitfuss and Sport Steger. Information about the condition of the rink is available from Mittersill municipality on +43 (0) 6562 62360.
