High-altitude reservoirs in Kaprun

High above Zell am See and Kaprun, an incomparable world of water, rock and electricity awaits you.
The lakes dammed up above the Kaprun Valley in the post-war period are still regarded today as engineering marvels. The two high-altitude reservoirs are perched high above Kaprun; on cloudless days, the view even stretches as far as the Steinernes Meer in Saalfelden. Particularly during the spring snowmelt, when both reservoirs are full and the turbines are running at full capacity, electricity is generated here for the entire region. During the summer months, you can visit and marvel at this marvellous world of engineering.

The Mooserboden dam is 107 metres high and almost 500 metres long. It spans the valley and can be seen from a long way down. The view from this structure is particularly impressive, as you can even see Lake Zell. You can only reach the reservoirs by bus or the inclined lift. During the ascent and whilst exploring the reservoirs, a free multimedia guide provides audio commentary – in audiobook quality – on the historical background, the interplay between nature and technology, and the legend of Kaprun.

At an altitude of over 2,000 metres, you’ll alight and find yourself in the high mountains. Here, you’ll have plenty of options. Set off on a hike along the reservoirs or climb a peak in the Hohe Tauern. But be careful: you must be back on time – you shouldn’t miss the last bus. Fancy a guided tour of the dam? Then discover the interior of these mighty structures and learnt lots of interesting facts about the construction, operation and maintenance of the concrete giants that hold the masses of water in their reservoirs. In the “Erlebniswelt Strom” exhibition, you’ll learn a great deal about the interplay between glaciers, power station construction and electricity generation. Two water-themed exhibits help visitors of all ages understand how a pumped-storage power station works by pumping and damming water, as well as activating various turbines.
