Kitzsteinhorn Glacier, Kaprun

3203 – this isn’t the telephone number of a Lower Austrian mountain tour operator; it’s the height of the Kitzsteinhorn. The cable car takes you almost all the way to the summit, covering a vertical distance of around 2,100 metres from the valley station. Once at the top, you’re treated to a phenomenal view of the rest of the Glockner Group and the Hohe Tauern National Park.
The viewing platform, aptly named ‘Top of Salzburg’, juts out far over the precipice and is not for the faint-hearted. In winter, the Kitzsteinhorn is a paradise for skiers and snowboarders and one of Austria’s best-known glacier ski resorts; in summer, it attracts walkers and hikers who like to take in the panoramic views.

The incredible panorama is definitely a must-see for every local and every holidaymaker. Gipfelwelt 3000 is actually the highest excursion destination in the Salzburgerland. High up, at over 3,000 metres, you’ll find yourself on the border of the Hohe Tauern National Park, where you can experience high-alpine nature with all your senses. Such an experience is normally reserved for experienced mountaineers, but the mountain railway takes you quickly and easily to over 3,000 metres, turning what would otherwise be a strenuous mountain hike into a leisurely outing.
