Tauern Cycle Route

If cycling is your favourite pastime, then the Tauern Cycle Route is definitely the one for you.
This cross-border tour starts in Krimml, in the Salzburg region, where you can experience the sheer power of nature at the Krimml Waterfalls up close.
The route then takes you through the Oberpinzgau region and finally into the city of Salzburg. From there, the route continues into the Innviertel region in Upper Austria. You’ll cross the border into Germany time and again on your way to your final destination, Passau.

The Tauern Cycle Route is 310 kilometres long, and you’ll climb approximately 750 metres in altitude along the way. Most of the route is tarmacked, making for an incredibly enjoyable and comfortable ride.
As a result, the route is also ideal for families. And don’t worry – the entire route is signposted, so you’ll always be on the right track.

The entire Tauern Cycle Route is signposted. At the start, it branches off to the left from the main road just past the railway station and takes you along the Krimmler Ache.
This is followed by a gentle 3-kilometre climb, during which you’ll pass the Krimml Waterfalls.

Here you’ll be cycling along a gravel cycle path which leads back to Vorderkrimmel, and just before the station you’ll cross a mountain stream. Here you need to turn right onto the cycle path, which runs alongside the main road. After about 1.5 kilometres, you’ll pass a campsite on your right and, at the end of a housing estate, you’ll turn left. The Tauern Cycle Route then takes you past an idyllic wood. The path then rejoins the main road and continues on to Wald. Once you arrive in Wald, cycle to the station; just before the warehouse, turn left and then continue straight on for about 500 metres. Here, the new cycle path leads into the Rosental valley. You then cross the Salzbach and cycle through the Obersulzbachtal valley. Shortly afterwards, the route leads through a wood and joins a gravel track in the hamlet of “Sulzau”. After the bridge, turn right after 200 metres. There is a bed and breakfast on the left-hand side, after which you pass under the main road. You then follow the village road to the market square in Neukirchen.

In Neukirchen, cycle along Dorfstraße, past the church and under the main road. The Tauern Cycle Route then crosses the Salzach Bridge and leads through a variety of pastures. At the next fork, keep to the right and the route joins an unpaved meadow path. Shortly afterwards, the path returns to tarmac. After Schönbach, you cross the stream and head left past the sawmill. Here you can see the ruins of Weyer. The route then crosses the Salzach again and passes under the main road.
After about 100 metres, turn left and, once you’re in Weyer, turn right past the church. You’ll reach a campsite and then cycle through a small industrial estate. Before the main road, turn left and then right 100 metres further on. The route then takes you straight to Bramberg am Wildkogel. Starting from the village square, cycle along the main road to the hamlet of Mühlbach. After that, the signposts will lead you straight to Hollersbach. There, you cross Hollersbach and, after a right-hand bend, follow the Salzach river to Mittersill.

Starting from the town square in Mittersill , head towards Felberstraße. After a few bends, you’ll need to go under this road and then carry on cycling towards Felben. After a few metres, you’ll cross the Salzach again and head towards Stuhlfelden. Passing Lichtenau Castle, you’ll reach Pirtendorf. After this small village, you’ll need to turn left and then follow the road for 2 kilometres to Uttendorf. Before the Dorfbach bridge, you’ll need to turn right and go under the main road. The route now runs alongside the Salzach as far as Lengdorf. Once you’ve crossed the Salzach bridge and reached the village of Niedernsill, turn right and cross to the other side of the road at the bus stop. Shortly afterwards, the path branches off to the right and runs for about 800 metres along the banks of the Salzach. After the underpass beneath the main road, you’ll cross another main road and the bridge over the Kapruner Ache. After that, all you have to do is turn right and you’ll be in the centre of Kaprun.

The route then follows the main road until you reach the Salzach bridge. This is where all three route options converge. If you carry on straight ahead, you’ll arrive directly in Zell am See. The official Tauern Cycle Route continues on the south bank of the Salzach. To get to Zell am See, you need to cycle along Kapruner Straße; the Pinzgauer Railway line runs alongside it here. Go under the main road and the Westbahn railway line. At Porscheallee, turn left and cycle along the lakeside promenade; this will take you straight into the town of Zell am See.
